This holiday season, downtown Barrie transforms into a winter wonderland, thanks to help from Rotarians and our incredible community of sponsors. The Festival of Trees is a spectacular display of festive lights and beautifully decorated trees along Lakeshore Drive, bringing joy and cheer to all who pass by.

While most people may think the dazzling lights are a city effort, it’s actually the Rotary Club of Barrie that makes it all happen, in partnership with generous local businesses. Their sponsorship ensures that these lights shine bright throughout the winter season, from the moment they’re lit during the Santa Claus parade through to the spring. The twinkling lights can be seen daily by thousands of commuters, with 16,000 cars traveling along Lakeshore Drive every day—that’s over 1.7 million views of the sponsor signs over the course of the display!

The Festival of Trees is not just a visual treat—it’s also a powerful community initiative. The funds raised through this event help support the Rotary Club of Barrie’s charitable efforts, which focus on a range of community projects, including local literacy programs and more. As you stroll along Lakeshore Drive, you’ll see sponsor logos and information proudly displayed on signs that will be visible for a minimum of 110 days, offering tremendous exposure for all involved.

The Festival of Trees is a beautiful reminder of the power of community and the joy of giving. It’s not just about the lights—it’s about coming together, supporting one another, and celebrating the season with kindness and generosity. The Rotary Club of Barrie is thrilled to share the incredible success of our first Charity Fair! With over 400 attendees and a total of $3,155 raised from the prize table, this event exemplified the power of community coming together for a good cause. The funds raised will be distributed among the participating charities and organizations, based on the number of tokens they collected at their booths. This unique token system allowed attendees to directly support causes close to their hearts while enjoying the event’s many attractions.

Each booth was filled with valuable information and engaging displays, but a few highlights made the day especially memorable. At Sweet Charity’s booth, a delightful dog stole the show by collecting tokens from attendees and dropping them into the donation bucket—a crowd favourite! Habitat for Humanity added a festive touch with Santa Claus himself, giving attendees the opportunity to take photos with the big man in red. Adding to the holiday spirit, the Glowing Hearts carollers serenaded the crowd with Christmas songs, creating a warm and joyful atmosphere inside Bradford Greenhouses despite the chilly weather outside.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the Rotarians who contributed their time and efforts to make this event such a success. Your dedication and hard work truly embody the spirit of Rotary. We are immensely proud of what we achieved together and look forward to continuing our efforts to support local charities and organizations.

On November 16, 2024, the Ganaraska Hiking Trail Association (GHTA) completed a significant environmental project in the Orrock Tract. With the support of a generous $3,000 donation from the Environmental Service committee of the Rotary Club of Barrie two years ago, three new bridges were constructed over creek crossings, enhancing safety and accessibility for all trail users.

These bridges, located between the Horseshoe Valley Rd/Old Second South intersection and Gill Road, protect sensitive stream beds while making the trail safer. Special thanks to Jason McArthur and Gary Pearson for their hard work in constructing these structures, which were completed with community collaboration and volunteer dedication.

This project is a prime example of how the Rotary Club of Barrie supports efforts that improve local spaces and promote environmental sustainability. We are proud to partner with the GHTA to ensure the Ganaraska Hiking Trail remains a safe and accessible resource for everyone.

In 2017, the Rotary Club of Barrie gifted the City of Barrie the iconic four-faced Rotary Clock at the base of Bayfield Street to commemorate Canada’s 150th anniversary. As part of the project, engraved granite memorial bricks were sold to fund the initiative, with the stones originally placed between the clock and the Government dock. Over time, winter conditions led to wear and damage to some of the stones, prompting their removal for refurbishing two years ago.

Now, the Rotary Club of Barrie and the City of Barrie are proud to announce the reinstallation of the granite stones in a new, more protected location. Two raised walls were constructed on both sides of the Rotary Clock, where the engraved stones have been placed to ensure long-term preservation from salt, sand, and plowing. The project’s completion has been met with great satisfaction, particularly from the original donors.

The Rotary Club is thrilled to see this meaningful project restored and looks forward to it being enjoyed for years to come.

On October 11, 2024, the Rotary Club of Barrie, together with the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority (NVCA) and Georgian Bay Forever, organised an impactful day of water-quality education for over 100 Grade 5 students at Ardagh Bluffs Public School. This event aimed to teach students about water conservation and environmental stewardship in a fun, interactive way.

The day kicked off with hands-on learning activities. Students examined the issue of microplastics and bioaccumulation, using microscopes to sift through soil for plastic fragments and learning about the harmful effects of pollutants on ecosystems. With the help of an NVCA educator, they explored how human activities impact local watersheds through the use of an “Enviroscape” model. This engaging exercise demonstrated how pollution can travel from urban environments into waterways and what steps can be taken to reduce these effects.

To further promote environmental responsibility, students partnered with the Rotary Club and Georgian Bay Forever to paint storm drains around the school with yellow fish and the message “Rain Only.” This public awareness activity highlighted the fact that stormwater flows untreated into natural waterways, reinforcing the need to keep oils, chemicals, and garbage out of our drains. Students also distributed flyers to nearby homes to spread the message within the community.

The day, initiated by Rotary’s David McCullough and funded by Georgian Bay Forever, was a great success. As a thank-you for their efforts, students enjoyed a pizza lunch provided by the Rotary Club. The club is proud to support programs that help educate and empower young people to take care of their environment and become the next generation of environmental stewards.

The Rotary Club of Barrie’s Environmental Committee made great strides at the Tiffin Centre for the Harold Parker Boardwalk project. With a team that included three Past Presidents and two Past Treasurers, progress was significant. The NVCA was very happy with the work accomplished. Special thanks to Gary Pearson, David McCullough, Chuck Boldt, and Bernie Still for their dedication!

The Rotary Club of Barrie is delighted to announce that this year’s Kempenfest was another incredible success! On behalf of the entire Kempenfest Team, Todd Tuckey presented the club with a generous cheque for $108,557.00. This remarkable amount represents the collective spirit and hard work of our dedicated Rotarians and the unwavering support of our community.

These funds will be used to continue supporting meaningful local projects that strengthen our community and improve the lives of those around us. A heartfelt thank you goes out to everyone who participated, volunteered, and supported the Rotary Beer Garden at Kempenfest 2024. Your contributions make a difference!

On October 24th The Rotary Club of Barrie hosted a special All Barrie Clubs Meeting to recognize World Polio Day, underscoring Rotary’s ongoing commitment to eradicating this disease worldwide. The event featured an insightful presentation by David, who spoke about the progress and challenges in the fight against polio.

Understanding Polio and Current Challenges

• David delved into the complexities of polio eradication and the barriers that persist today. He highlighted the ongoing issues in regions such as Pakistan and Afghanistan:
• Currently, there are 32 confirmed cases of polio in Pakistan. Despite the challenges, the Pakistani government remains highly supportive of eradication efforts.
• An important cultural note: children who receive the polio vaccine have their pinky finger painted as a sign of vaccination, though some are marked without actually being vaccinated.
• Tribal elders in Pakistan continue to negotiate with the government, seeking concessions that impact vaccination campaigns.
• Tragically, the fight against polio remains dangerous—this year alone, 15 vaccinators and police have lost their lives in Pakistan.

In Afghanistan, the situation is also fraught with difficulty:

• The government has reported fewer than 22 confirmed cases; however, active cases may be underreported.
• A significant setback occurred in September when Afghanistan’s government suspended further vaccinations.

Global and Local Support for Polio Eradication

David emphasised that Canadians, including the Rotary community, are steadfast in their support of the global polio eradication initiative. He encouraged members to continue their contributions, highlighting the importance of joining the District 7010 Polio Plus Society with a donation of $100 or more. This ongoing support is crucial as Rotary remains committed to the promise made in 1985 to eradicate polio worldwide.

Rotary’s Continued Dedication

David’s presentation included technical details about how polio spreads, sparking thoughtful questions from attendees, all of which he competently answered. District Governor Stephen Wilkinson thanked David for his thorough and engaging talk. The meeting concluded with Rotarians gathering outside Barrie City Hall for a flag-raising ceremony to mark World Polio Day, a powerful symbol of their unity and resolve.

As we look forward, it’s important that Rotarians and community members remain active in supporting polio eradication efforts, ensuring that the legacy of compassion and determination continues.

The Rotary Club of Barrie was honoured to participate in the Accessible Halloween event hosted by Oatley Vigmond this year. This incredible event allowed children and individuals who may find Halloween challenging or otherwise inaccessible to fully experience the joy of Halloween in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

Rotary members dedicated their time and resources to ensure the success of the event, creating a memorable day filled with costumes, treats, and smiles. From decorating booths to handing out candy and helping make the activities accessible for all, our members were thrilled to play a role in making Halloween a joyous occasion for everyone.

We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who donated time, money, and resources. Your generosity made it possible to provide a truly inclusive Halloween experience for our community. It was a heartwarming reminder of the power of community and compassion, and we’re already looking forward to supporting this event again next year!

For decades, Rotary has been at the forefront of the fight to end polio, and this day serves as a powerful reminder of Rotary’s mission to rid the world of this devastating disease once and for all.

The Progress So Far: A 99.9% Reduction in Polio Cases

Through Rotary’s End Polio Now campaign, global polio cases have been reduced by an astounding 99.9%, bringing us closer than ever to a polio-free world. From widespread vaccinations to raising awareness and funding, Rotary’s commitment to this cause has made a profound impact on global health.

Yet, despite this progress, the fight is not over. Polio remains a threat in some parts of the world, and continued efforts are crucial to ensure that no child suffers from this preventable disease.
