Rotary Club of Barrie supports literacy with annual Rotary Book Day

Each November, over 1,350 Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) Grade 2 students will receive copies of Andy & Elmer’s Apple Dumpling Adventure, thanks to a donation by the Rotary Club of Barrie. Schools will have the option of inviting Rotarians to visit their school for a read-along, or to watch a video recording of Rotary mascot Sprocket reading the book.

Aligned with the SCDSB’s character education program, Andy & Elmer’s Apple Dumpling Adventure is a story of a young entrepreneur named Andy who, with the help of a mysterious voice providing guidance and support, learns the value of truthfulness, fairness, goodwill, and partnerships that benefit everyone involved. On Rotary Book Day, Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Barrie will coordinate the delivery of books and reading of books to students at schools throughout Barrie.

The Story Behind Our Book Project

Jason McArthur began this project in 2016 and since then we have run it every year including COVID years. Rotarian volunteers visit each English Public elementary school in Barrie to read the book Andy and Elmer’s Apple Dumpling Adventure. The book is produced by the Rotary Club of Fairborn Ohio as a Fundraiser. We are the largest ordering group outside of the USA and have now been included in their promotional video. During the COVID years when we couldn’t visit the school, we made a video of Sprocket reading the book, and the schools played the video for the kids. Since 2003 we’ve been back in person and bringing local celebrities like the Mayor, Fire Chief and the Police Chief to help us distrusted books and read to local grade 2 students.

Since 2020 the Rotary Club of Innisfil has also participated in providing local schools books to their grade two students. Each year Rotary members get together for our annual “book party” to sort the books for each of the participating schools and add stickers thanking our sponsors who generous donations make this possible.

In 2020, we initiated the Book Project Contest, encouraging children to bring the book home and engage in a fun activity—making Apple Dumplings. The book conveniently features a delightful Apple Dumplings recipe at its conclusion. Participants are then invited to share a snapshot of their culinary creations on our Club’s Facebook page. To add an exciting twist, we conduct a draw among all the participating families, with one lucky winner receiving a Chrome Notebook. This not only promotes the Club but also attracts diverse audiences to explore our website, enhancing our online presence.
