On the eve of Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, member Doug Bingley took the floor at the September 24th meeting and delivered a talk that earned two rounds of applause.

Doug spoke honestly about the history of residential schools in Canada, addressing the questions and pushback this history sometimes generates. He did not ask anyone to carry guilt for things they did not personally do. He asked for something more achievable, truthfulness, acknowledgement, and a willingness to learn.

“We cannot rewrite the past. But we can be truthful about it, learn from it, and address the consequences that remain to this day. And that is our collective responsibility.”

The talk was well-researched and deeply felt. Several members requested a copy. If you were not at the meeting, it is worth reading. September 30th is a day to listen, and Doug reminded us that listening is where it starts.
